6 Things You Might Not Know About The EdgeMax EdgeRouter!

We found that customers, often when asked, have heard of the EdgeMAX EdgeRouter from Ubiquiti but that’s usually where the conversation ends. So we’ve decided to focus on 6 major facts about the EdgeRouter series that we feel you need to be aware of. For example, did you know that the EdgeRouter PoE and EdgeRouter Lite models were the world’s first economical router capable of routing up to 1 million packets per second?

Packets per second

Today the EdgeRouter Pro and 8-Port EdgeRouter are even faster, capable of routing up to 2 million+ packets per second! At 64-bytes each – it equates to 128 Gb/s processing rate from port to port. This means it can process some serious routing!

EdgeOS

The EdgeRouter Series is powered by EdgeOS, a sophisticated operating system loaded with robust features, including:

  • Static routes and support of routing protocols: OSPF, RIP, and BGP
  • Firewall policies and NAT rules
  • DHCP services
  • Quality of Service (QoS)
  • Network administration and monitoring tools
  • Comprehensive IPv6 support
  • Choice of configuration methods: the graphical user interface to visualize the workings of your network or the Command Line Interface (CLI) to use advanced, command‑driven configuration

Using the Graphical user interface makes it fantastically easy to use, even for people without the CLI knowledge.

Configuration by CLI

The CLI provides quick and flexible configuration by command line and features the following:

  • For power users, configuration and monitoring of all advanced features
  • Direct access to standard Linux tools and shell commands
  • CLI access through the serial console port, SSH, Telnet, and the graphical user interface

CLI – for the guys used to using CLI for routing, this is still available.

DHCP Server

You can set up multiple DHCP servers to assign IP ranges in different subnets on the different interfaces (each Gigabit port functions as an independent interface). You can now easily control dynamic and static IP addressing for your network devices!

Firewall Policies and Groups

Organize the rules you apply in the order you specify and then apply the policies to groups filtered by IP address, network address, or port number.

A firewall helps to keep attackers or external threats from getting access to your system in the first place. With this, you can now have different groups or departments within your network and customise the groups settings individually without the need to use different routers/firewalls.

NAT Rules

The EdgeRouter changes packet addressing based on your customized source and destination NAT rules.

Simply put it is the process of mapping one IP address to another. NAT is short for Network Address Translation. NAT is an Internet standard that enables a local-area network (LAN) to use one set of IP addresses for internal traffic and a second set of addresses for external traffic. A NAT box located where the LAN meets the Internet makes all necessary IP address translations.
