What is EPON:

EPON is an Ethernet Passive Optical Network that provides symmetrical network speeds up to 1,25Gbps per EPON port (that’s 1,25Gbps upstream and downstream). EPON consists of three basic components: an OLT, Splitters and ONU’s.

OLT:

An Optical Line Terminal (OLT) unit is found at the service provider’s office/network and distributes the fibre and internet access to the subscribers in an EPON solution.

Optical Splitter:

EPON clients are serviced through a single optical fibre per port on the OLT. A splitter is an unpowered device that simply divides the optical fibre line into either 2, 4, 8, 16 or 32 optical fibre lines. Every port on the OLT can service up to 64 clients / ONU’s.

ONU:

The Optical Network Unit (ONU) is found inside the customer’s premises and this is where the fibre is terminated: it converts the fibre signal to digital. ONU’s provide an Ethernet Port, and may include a switch, router or Wi-Fi access depending on the model selected.
