Why AGM and Gel?
Flooded vs Gel vs AGM
There are a few types of lead acid deep cycle batteries to choose from: flooded, gel cell, or sealed absorbent glass mat (AGM). For most situations a sealed AGM is the safest and best option. Flooded batteries have the advantage of being significantly less expensive, but they require adequate ventilation, maintenance, and also have the potential liability of tipping or spilling. All though there are a lot of similarities between Gel Cell and AGM batteries (both are non-spillable, can be mounted in any position, are safe for use in limited ventilation areas and don’t need any special handling when transported), AGM batteries are typically lighter and less expensive per amp-hour compared to Gel Cell.
The benefits of using MiRO’s AGM and Gel Cell batteries
AGM has very low internal resistance, is capable of delivering high currents on demand and offers a relatively long service life, even when deep cycled. AGM is maintenance free, provides good electrical reliability and is lighter than the flooded lead acid type. While regular lead acid batteries need a topping charge every six months to prevent the buildup of sulfation, AGM batteries are less prone to sulfation and can sit in storage for longer before a charge becomes necessary. The battery stands up well to low temperatures and has a low self-discharge.
The leading advantages of AGM are a charge that is up to five times faster than the flooded version, and the ability to deep cycle. AGM offers a depth-of-discharge of 80 percent; the flooded, on the other hand, is specified at 50 percent DoD to attain the same cycle life. (Extracted from batteryuniversity.com)
The Gel Cell Battery excels in slow discharge rates and slightly higher ambient operating temperatures, making it ideal form low consumption, outdoor applications.
