Don’t let the wires, terminals and panels create a reluctance to move over to green energy on you high sites. We have decided to make solar easy again by putting the layouts into a graphical format to boost your confidence in the field.
Setup with Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) Regulators:
Pros: PWM regulators are more cost effective
Cons: Thicker power cables must be used from solar panel to regulator (lower voltage, higher current). Battery bank voltage has to match panel array voltage.
Setup 1: 12V Panels (parallel), PWM Regulator, 12V Battery Bank (parallel)
Both the Batteries and Solar panels are connected in parallel and are connected to each other via a PWM Regulator.
Setup 2: 12V Panels (series), PWM Regulator, 24V Battery Bank (series)
Both the solar panels and batteries are connected in series and are connected to each other via a PWM Regulator.
Setup 3: 24V Panels (parallel), PWM Regulator, 24V Battery bank (series)
The solar panels are connected in parallel but the batteries are connected in series, and they are connected to each other via a PWM Regulator.
Setup with Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) Regulators
Pros: Thinner cables can be used from panels to the regulator. A Higher voltage from panels means longer cable runs from panels to regulator. Current is tracked for the maximum battery charge. Panel voltage can be up to 4 times the battery voltage. No need for the voltage to match your panel array and battery bank.
Cons: MPPT regulators is more expensive
Setup version 4: 12V Battery Bank, MPPT Regulator, 4 x 12V panels (series)
There are multiple solar panels connected in series and the batteries are connected in parallel, and they are connected to each other via an MPPT Regulator.
Set up version 5: 24V Battery Bank, MPPT Regulator, 4 x 12V panels (series)
The multiple solar panels, as well as the batteries, are connected in series and then connected to each other through an MPPT Regulator.
